    Reach modelling for drive-up self-service

    People using a self-service terminal such as an automated teller machine (ATM) tend to adjust their physical position throughout a transaction. This is particularly apparent with terminals that are designed to be used from a vehicle (i.e. drive up automated teller machines or ATMs). Existing predictive tools tend to focus on static reach and provide limited predictions for how far people are willing to stretch to complete a task. Drive-up self-service products have 3 main challenges: the variability of vehicles, people and driver behaviour. Such conventional tools are therefore of limited use in understanding how much people are willing to move to use a self-service terminal. Work is described to build in-house predictive models based on 2 large empirical studies of reach in a drive up installation. These 2 studies assessed comfortable and extended reach from 10 vehicle categories. Extended reach was defined as stretching/leaning as far as participants would normally be willing to in order to complete a drive-up transaction. Findings from these studies indicated that participants are prepared to adopt more extreme postures at drive-up than in other situations with extended reach at drive-up being significantly different to what might be seen at a walk-up kiosk

    Observable and hidden singular features of large fluctuations in nonequilibrium systems

    We study local features, and provide a topological insight into the global structure of the probability density distribution and of the pattern of the optimal paths for large rare fluctuations away from a stable state. In contrast to extremal paths in quantum mechanics, the optimal paths do {\it not} encounter caustics. We show how this occurs, and what, instead of caustics, are the experimentally observable singularities of the pattern.     Automated design analysis, assembly planning and motion study analysis using immersive virtual reality

    Previous research work at Heriot-Watt University using immersive virtual reality (VR) for cable harness design showed that VR provided substantial productivity gains over traditional computer-aided design (CAD) systems. This follow-on work was aimed at understanding the degree to which aspects of this technology were contributed to these benefits and to determine if engineering design and planning processes could be analysed in detail by nonintrusively monitoring and logging engineering tasks. This involved using a CAD-equivalent VR system for cable harness routing design, harness assembly and installation planning that can be functionally evaluated using a set of creative design-tasks to measure the system and users' performance. A novel design task categorisation scheme was created and formalised which broke down the cable harness design process and associated activities. The system was also used to demonstrate the automatic generation of usable bulkhead connector, cable harness assembly and cable harness installation plans from non-intrusive user logging. Finally, the data generated from the user-logging allowed the automated activity categorisation of the user actions, automated generation of process flow diagrams and chronocyclegraphs

    Action functional and quasi-potential for the Burgers equation in a bounded interval

    Consider the viscous Burgers equation ut+f(u)x=ϵuxxu_t + f(u)_x = \epsilon\, u_{xx} on the interval [0,1][0,1] with the inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions u(t,0)=ρ0u(t,0) = \rho_0, u(t,1)=ρ1u(t,1) = \rho_1. The flux ff is the function f(u)=u(1u)f(u)= u(1-u), ϵ>0\epsilon>0 is the viscosity, and the boundary data satisfy 0<ρ0<ρ1<10<\rho_0<\rho_1<1. We examine the quasi-potential corresponding to an action functional, arising from non-equilibrium statistical mechanical models, associated to the above equation. We provide a static variational formula for the quasi-potential and characterize the optimal paths for the dynamical problem. In contrast with previous cases, for small enough viscosity, the variational problem defining the quasi potential admits more than one minimizer. This phenomenon is interpreted as a non-equilibrium phase transition and corresponds to points where the super-differential of the quasi-potential is not a singleton

    Noise-Activated Escape from a Sloshing Potential Well

    We treat the noise-activated escape from a one-dimensional potential well of an overdamped particle, to which a periodic force of fixed frequency is applied. We determine the boundary layer behavior, and the physically relevant length scales, near the oscillating well top. We show how stochastic behavior near the well top generalizes the behavior first determined by Kramers, in the case without forcing. Both the case when the forcing dies away in the weak noise limit, and the case when it does not, are examined.
